- Inline diesel injection pump: The diesel pumps used an in-line layout comprising the series of cam-operated injection cylinders in the early days. The pistons have a constant stroke volume. The injection volume of the cylinder often called throttling is controlled by rotating the cylinders against the cut-off part aligning with a helical slot inside the cylinder. Once all the cylinders are rotated, they vary in their injection volume in order to produce less or more power from the engine. The inline pumps favor on large cylinder engines like construction plant, static engines, trucks and agricultural vehicles.
- Distributor diesel injection pump: The distributor pump also called a rotary pump was developed to use cars and light trucks. It uses a single injection cylinder driven from an axial place that injects into the individual fuel lines through the rotary distribution valve. Some of the VE variants have a pressure-based system that allows the volume of injection to increase over the normal in order to allow a turbocharger or supercharger which is equipped to develop more power under boost conditions.
- Inline diesel metering pump: A governor is incorporated in almost all the injection pumps to cut the fuel supply if the crankshaft rotation per minute endangers the engine. The heavy parts of the diesel engines that move don not tolerate overspeeding well and catastrophic damage that occurs if they are over-revved. The less maintained engines consume the lubrication oil through worn out crankcase ventilation systems and cause increasing engine speed until the engine is destroyed. This is because the diesel engines mostly regulate their speed by fuel supply control and do not have a throttle valve in order to control air intake.

Coordinated by the timing belt of the engine, the diesel injection pump is introduced into the fuel into the engine just before the cylinder’s compression stroke that reaches the top.
- A rotary or distributor pump is primarily used in small cars and trucks. This kind of diesel injection pump delivers the fuel to the carburetor or injection system.
- An electronic fuel injection pump is another kind of diesel pump that has built-in safety logic that shuts down the pump in the event of an accident or if it registers no oil pressure in the engine.
- The water-driven diesel pumps are a widely used agricultural industry. These pumps are directly installed in a water supply line so that the injector functions using water pressure as a source of power. This type of injection pump introduces the chemicals or fertilizers into the water supply or irrigation system.
- Finally, the chemical injection pump functions in a similar way as the pumps used in irrigation or chemigation. It involves the process of delivering chemicals to crops and soil. This type of pump draws a measured amount of chemicals from the contaminated tank and then injects it into the irrigation system.
