Laminated Solar Panels

Solar panel lamination is an important process that aims to increase the life of your solar cells. The most common way of laminating solar panels is by using a lamination machine which has its advantages and disadvantages but is completely optional. Ethylene-vinyl acetate is the layer that helps laminate both sides of a particular panel. The sequence of lamination layers goes as- Glass > EVA > Solar strings > EVA > Tedlar-polyester-Tedlar (TPT). After the five layers are properly in place during the lamination process, the machine heats to 135 degrees Celsius for approximately 22 minutes until they stick together like glue. Lamination is an effective process that is proven to have advantages, but there are certain disadvantages. PV lamination, for starters, is very expensive as the machine is made of exotic materials and consumes a lot of electricity. In most solar panel industries, lamination is considered an additional task which bottlenecks the whole process. Lamination can produce at most six panels in an hour, which is considerably slow.

Frequently Asked Questions on Laminated Solar Panels

1. How do laminated solar panels work

Lamination is a process in solar panel manufacturing that increases the lifespan of your solar panel. Laminated solar panels do not have any significant difference in the work process than non-laminated panels. The significant difference appears only in the functionality. With laminated panels, you can notice a significant improvement in the lifespan of your panels. A specific machine helps you laminate solar panels if you have the essential items with you.

2. What are the significant advantages of using laminated solar panels

Laminated solar panels are rarely in the application, but they provide many benefits over crystalline panels-

  • Laminated solar panels have a longer lifespan in comparison to crystalline solar panels
  • Laminated solar panels come in different styles and sizes, increasing customizability.
  • Laminated solar panels are flexible, which also makes them very lightweight.
  • Laminated solar panels are great for household use, where customization is sometimes a norm.

3. What are the essential components of laminated solar panels

Laminated solar panels have a lot of layers which the lamination machine molds together through heat. But a few of the essential components are-

  • Photovoltaic layer- The essential part of the solar panel is the PV layer. This layer is responsible for converting the sun’s light into electricity. PV layers are mostly made of silicon and have uniform power ratings. The rating of a particular solar panel depends upon the size of the PV cell.
  • Battery- The battery of a particular panel is an essential aspect of the whole panel as it stores the extra electricity which other appliances don’t use. This electricity can be essential when there is no production.
  • EVA layer- This layer is what provides the photovoltaic cells their increased durability. EVA can only glue onto the panels at high temperatures when they melt and mold on top of the cells. EVA layers also help improve the light flow which enters the panels.

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of laminated solar panels

Laminated solar panels provide excellent durability and efficiency with renewable energy, but certain disadvantages set them apart from other panels.

Advantages-

  • Laminated solar panels are very durable and last longer because of the EVA and TPT layers.
  • Laminated solar panels can help you customize your recharge station, as they come in different styles and sizes.
  • Laminated solar panels are very flexible, which makes them great for portable use.
  • Laminated solar panels are lightweight to install, making them versatile.

Disadvantages-

  • Laminated solar panels cost more than thin-film solar panels to install and manage
  • Laminated solar panels are slow to produce, making most manufacturing industries outsource their projects.
  • Laminated solar panels production is not energy efficient because it requires temperatures up-to 132 degrees for half an hour.
  • Laminated solar panels are not as efficient as crystalline panels in energy production, making them suitable for small-scale use.

5. What are the components of laminated solar panels

Laminated solar panels have many different components that help them create electricity from solar energy efficiently and consistently.

  • Glass
  • EVA
  • Photovoltaic cells
  • EVA
  • Tedlar-polyester-Tedlar (TPT).
