These extinguishers are ideal for B and C class and electrical fires. Inflammable liquid fires like petrol, paraffin, oil, varnishes, paints and spirits as well as gaseous fires like LPG and Acetylene. CO₂ is a stored in liquefied form at a pressure of 800-900p.s.i. CO₂ gas liquefies at 780p.s.i. at temperature below 88F (31 C) at temperature above 88F (31 C) CO₂ is in gaseous state.
The cylinders for CO₂ extinguishers are made of seamless Manganese steel. As they hold compressed liquefied. CO₂ at high pressure they come under the gas cylinder rules. Each cylinder must be supported by a certificate from the Chief Controllerate of Explosives. Each cylinder is pressure tested to 3360p.s.i. (240kg.cm2) before filling.
CO₂ gas is discharged as a dense white cloud. This is because liquefied CO₂ on contact with atmospheric air cools to - 110 F (Approx. 43Deg.C) as it changes to gaseous state, as it acquires heat from itself to convert from liquid to gaseous state. About 30% of the CO₂ changes to 'Dry Ice' which sub-lines eventually to CO₂ gas. To prevent frostbite to the operator, insulated horn is used in these Appliances.CO₂ gas being 1.5 times heavier than air is directed as close to the base of the fire as possible. It displaces air to settle at the bottom thus choking of the air supply. A continuous discharge of CO₂ gas is an extremely effective fire killer. It dilutes the oxygen content of the air from 20% to below 15% thus preventing combustion.
CO₂ can be used to fight almost all fires except reactive metals that decompose CO₂ gas, or materials like cellulose nitrate which have their own oxygen supply. CO₂ is a clean agent and leaves no trace hence is good for laboratories, libraries, Museums, Computer Rooms where damage to delicate or precious items has to be minimized.
