Cooling water system is a part of industrial operation system in general, chemical process industries and power plants. In particular industry, big or small cannot conceive the smooth operations of the process plants without the successful operation of its cooling system. Design of cooling towers, quality of water used in cooling system, water chemistry and the related internal and external treatment applied, all go hand in hand for the successful operation of cooling system, so vital for the maintenance of critical parameters of reactors, condensers, vacuum pump, gas turbines etc.., and energy management in the entire operations.

A) CORROSION:

Corrosion continues to remain the scourge of cooling water systems. Corrosion can induced by a wide variety of factors over which control can seldom be exercised. However, an in depth understanding of the cooling system and nature of the make up water would go a long way in alleviating the problem.

• The Langlier index and Ryznar index indicate whether the water will have corrosion tendency or scaling tendency when cycled in the cooling system.

• Scale formation can also induce corrosion which is commonly known as under deposit corrosion. The part of the metal under the deposit has less access to oxygen as compared to the part free from deposits. Thus a differential aeration cell is formed. Since the less aerated part becomes the anode and metal loss take place only at the anode, deep pits are formed below the deposits. In order to inhibit this type of corrosion, it is necessary for the corrosion inhibitor to penetrate through the scale deposits and passive the metal surface below it. The situation therefore, warrants the use of powerful corrosion inhibitor to minimise and control deposition.

• B) DEPOSITION

  Hardness salts can be deposited in localized high temperature areas. This type of deposition may be aggravated if the flow velocity of water in these areas is also low.Corrosion products may also agglomerate with other foulants and get deposited in key areas of the cooling system necessitating the use of powerful dispersant . As mentioned In previous paragraph that deposition will also lead to under deposit corrosion and hence Powerful antiscalant is essential for successful treatment.
