Package type boilers are usually smaller capacity boilers which incorporate a steel tube rolled in a coil form (hence, these are also popularly named as “Coil Type Boilers”). Standard models develop steam pressures between 10 - 20 bar and have capacities normally ranging from 50 kg/hr upto 3500 kg/hr. The models with low coil holding volumes are also termed as Non-IBR boilers. Their ability to offer steam within extremely short period of time makes them highly popular. The coils used have smaller inner diameters and hence get scaling deposits on the inner walls. This increases the pressure drop across the coil and makes the feed pump operate at variable pressures. The application calls for a pump with constant flow characteristic at variable pressures. These boilers have comparitively lower pump flow requirements but at higher operating pressures.

Piston / Plunger pumps offer the most effective solution to the above prolems. Along with offering constant flow characteristic these pumps are extremely efficient at high pressures.
